Envirotreat were commissioned by the Hellens Group to undertake remediation of contaminated sediments at Stewart Park, Middlesbrough. One part of the overall regeneration scheme for Stewart Park involves the regeneration of three ornamental lakes which form part of a sustainable urban drainage system for the park and surrounding area. To increase the capacity of lakes, it was proposed that the sediment which had accumulated over many years be removed and the lakes expanded. Analysis indicated the sediments to be hazardous and therefore requiring disposal at a hazardous landfill, following pre-treatment on site. Envirotreat were able to deliver a remediation strategy which involved the chemical and physical stabilisation of their contaminated sediments by E-Clay to enable their re-use on site.
