Former Industrial, South Wales – Soil & Groundwater Remediation

Envirotreat has been appointed by Arcadis to deliver specialist soil and groundwater remediation services at a former industrial site in South Wales, which has been earmarked for redevelopment for new industrial use.

Commencing in October 2025, the remediation programme has combined a range of innovative and sustainable treatment techniques to address complex ground contamination while supporting the site’s future redevelopment.

A key element of the works has been the application of Envirotreat’s market-leading E-Clay stabilisation technology, which has been used to successfully treat approximately 3,000m³ of hydrocarbon-impacted soil. In addition, Envirotreat has designed and installed a soil-mixed Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) to remediate groundwater impacted by chlorinated hydrocarbons, providing a long-term in situ treatment solution.

The project has also required specialist management of several additional environmental challenges. Envirotreat has provided technical expertise for the classification and management of PFAS-impacted soils requiring off-site disposal, while responding to previously unidentified contamination associated with historic underground pipework uncovered during demolition works.

To ensure compliance throughout the remediation programme, contaminated groundwater generated during the works has been managed using a purpose-designed on-site water treatment system, enabling safe and controlled treatment prior to discharge.

With demolition activities now nearing completion, remediation works remain on programme and are expected to conclude in late summer 2026. The project highlights Envirotreat’s capability to deliver integrated remediation solutions for complex brownfield redevelopment sites, combining innovative treatment technologies with practical environmental management to facilitate sustainable regeneration.
