Sunninghill Sub-station, Ascot – Soil Management

Options Energy Limited had a requirement to install a new high voltage cable at a primary substation at Sunninghill, Ascot. This formed part of a recently constructed residential development on a former gas works site. The area designated for the HV cable was believed to contain residual gas works waste material, including spent oxide (“Blue Billy”). In February 2026, Envirotreat was initially engaged to excavate a series of trial pits in the area to collect suitable samples to identify contamination and provide waste classification for the soil for any anticipated off site disposal. The soil was confirmed as hazardous for HP7 and HP11 and above environmental generic reuse criteria. The excavated soil therefore required disposal, Envirotreat co-ordinated the work to ensure the soisl were transported to a local soil recycling facility to ensure beneficial reuse following treatment.
