Gas Works Remediation Jersey

Envirotreat has been working with ROK for a number of years developing and gaining regulatory approval for the remediation of part of the former St Helier (Jersey) Gas Works site.

The site has planning for the construction of 195 new homes. 169 of which will be available as affordable social housing, and a small number of commercial units. Andium Homes acquired the majority of the former site. The development will known as Northern Quarter. The site is next to Grand Marche Coop and opposite the Millennium Town Park (part of the old St Helier gas works).

A number of previous site investigations have been undertaken which highlighted soil and groundwater contamination associated with former gas works activities (ie TPHs, PAHs and cyanides). Additionally, there had been a heating oil spill whilst the site was used as the warehouse.

Envirotreat undertook long term groundwater monitoring of the site to establish background data and remediation criteria / requirements.

Leading from these works, Envirotreat prepared a Remediation Options Appraisal and Remediation Strategy to gain the necessary regulatory approval. Envirotreat applied to States of Jersey for a suitable Permit to undertake the works.

Further site investigation works to facilitate waste classification and disposal prior to the works commencing.

Envirotreat proposed and implemented an integrated remediation strategy involving the design and installation of an E-Clay Permeable Reactive Barrier and source treatment (E-Clay Stabilisation) of both the heating oil spill and the contamination associated with the former benzol tanks present onsite.

Remediation works commenced 24th April and were complete by 6th June. Ongoing attendance as part of the watching brief and groundwater monitoring.
