PFAS Remediation – New Inn Fire Station, Pontypool
Envirotreat delivered a full investigation and remediation solution to address legacy PFAS contamination at the former New Inn Fire Station, Pontypool. Initial site investigations had not identified contaminants of concern, but given the site’s historic use and proximity to the Afon Lwyd, Envirotreat advised and undertook targeted PFAS investigations.
Supplementary trial pits, soil sampling, borehole installation and groundwater monitoring confirmed PFAS in both soil and groundwater, with migration toward the river. Working closely with the client and regulators, Envirotreat designed and installed a Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) using proprietary pillared clay technology to intercept and immobilise PFAS while maintaining natural groundwater flow.
The PRB was installed ahead of demolition works to ensure maximum protection of the watercourse. Post‑installation permeability testing confirmed no adverse impact on groundwater movement, and soil testing demonstrated significant PFAS reduction at the site boundary. Validation monitoring is ongoing.
Outcome: A robust, regulator‑approved remediation solution enabling safe redevelopment of the site while protecting sensitive surface water receptors.
